Magistrate Court

 

Each county also has a magistrate court which hears misdemeanor criminal cases, arraigns persons under arrest and sets bond in both felony and misdemeanor cases, conducts felony preliminary hearings, and also hears civil cases.  Many of the civil cases heard in magistrate court concern landlord / tenant disputes.  Magistrates have power or jurisdiction to hear civil cases when the amount in dispute is less than $5000.  

 

In Wood County, there are four magistrates, each elected to a four-year term:

The Honorable Joyce Purkey

 

Wood County Magistrate Court is located at 208 Avery Street, Parkersburg, West Virginia (across from the Parkersburg Fire Department.)    Free parking is available in the parking lot at the Court.

 

Records:  The records of the Magistrate Court are maintained by the Magistrate Court Clerk, Paulina Yearego and her staff.  Her office is also located at the Magistrate Court Building at 208 Avery Street in Parkersburg.  The phone number is 422-3444.
