West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals

 

At the top of the West Virginia court system is the West Virginia’s Supreme Court of Appeals, located in Charleston, West Virginia.  Five justices, each elected to twelve year terms serve on our Supreme Court.  This Court hears appeals from the Circuit Courts and Family Courts.  Additionally, certain cases may be filed directly at the Supreme Court of Appeals.

 

Appeals are decided by the justices based on the record of proceedings which has been made in the court below, the written briefs which summarize the facts and legal arguments of the parties, and perhaps oral arguments presented by attorneys.  Supreme Court proceedings are open to the public, and may also be heard on web cast.
